How was Mox Shoes USA born?

Family of Stacey's friends in Australia started the business in 2011.  When they came to visit Stacey in the USA they brought her a pair and it was love at first wear.  After that, whenever Stacey visited Australia, she would bring them back for Amber and other US friends.  Every time we wore them we always got asked about them and thought the American market would love them just as much as we did.  We approached the Australian company and when they were ready to expand to the USA we were in business.  It was started by a stay at home Mom in Australia, which worked well for Amber and Stacey as well because we were both stay at home moms.  Mox Shoes USA was born in the Spring of 2015.

What is your best piece of style advice?

With being busy Mom's, we want to make sure we can look great on the run as we move from one activity to the next.  Versatility is key for us.  We love outfits that can move you from school pick up, soccer training then onto a date night with the hubby.  Oh, and we love stripes! Our closets are full of striped t-shirts, sweaters and dresses.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself?

1.  It's an all girl show here.  Amber has 2 daughters and Stacey has 3, between us they range from 12 yrs old to 4 months old.

2.  Both of us have ties to Australia.  Stacey is Australian and Amber lived there for a year.  Miss those Aussie beaches and friends!

3. We are fair weather girls.  The warm weather gives us all the opportunities to do the things we love such as hiking, swimming, backyard barbecues and of course sipping some bubbles on a summers evening.

I have continued to have an absolute ball working with the uber talented and stylish Amber Harrison, Style and Trend Expert of Wedding Paper Divas, a division of Shutterfly.
It's not uncommon to find her in front of the camera, whether it be at media events or in her latest ongoing project, filming short videos that focus on wedding tips called "Small Talk, Big Day".
So my job is to help this lady look even more fabulous! As I have said before, Amber is one of my top five stylish Mumma's, but she has zero time, so she looks to me to support her in putting together outfits for the camera. So I wanted to give you another behind the scenes glimpse on working with the wonderful lady since my last post featuring Amber, titled Lights, Camera, Style.

I adore this dress, especially the color! The tapered cuffs are just so cute, with the perfect amount of billow. Paired with a gold belt and a fabulous statement necklace.

Above is the set we are working with, where all the magic of Small Talk, Big Day takes place. We need to work with the design and colors to compliment in what she wears on set. Multiple locations are used whether it be sitting on that incredible pink lounger, standing at the desk or sitting in front of  the laptop. What FUN!

Love the design of this blouse and the black and white colors compliment the colors in the set. It's paired with a fabulous black tulle skirt!

The circular shapes in her statement necklace match the long sleeves of her sweater.  And check out that set wall - circular!

I interviewed Co-founder Danielle to get to know Georgie wear a bit more. Here is what she had to say.

1. How was Georgie wear born?
We began getting back into shape after giving birth and both found ourselves wearing yoga pants or running shorts for much of the day. We loved the fit and the feel of the athletic fabrics but didn't love the nagging feeling that we looked a little too causal. Georgie began from our desire to take the things we love about activewear (the fit and the fabrics) and create stylish and feminine post workout clothes.

2. What is your best piece of style advice?
It's essential to feel comfortable in what you're wearing and to wear what makes you feel good, beyond that it's anything goes. I love this quote from Simon Doonan, "Conformity is the only real fashion crime. To not dress like yourself and to sublimate your spirit to some kind of group identity is succumbing to fashion fascism".

3. Tell me three things about yourself my readers might like to know?

• Meikel and I are childhood friends and were co-captains of our high school volleyball team. 
• We both studied art in college (Danielle installation art and Meikel photography). 
• We are moms to five boys age 6 and under.

4. Who is Georgie wear aimed at?
Our clothes are for lifelong athletes, women who prioritize the functionality of their clothes as much as the style.

I was recently asked by Amber Harrison, the Style and Trend Expert for Wedding Paper Divas, to help style her for an upcoming media event in LA. An event to launch the new partnership between Wedding Paper Divas and celebrity wedding planner, Mindy Weiss.   Now, if I had to count my top 5 stylish Diva's, Amber would make the list, but, Amber has zero time to shop and style herself for an event, that's where YummoMummo steps in!

Amber let me know a few important facts about her and the event. We knew what Mindy Weiss would be wearing (for clashing purposes), the photo backdrop and that it was a day event.   Knowing this and other things are key to pulling together what would be an ah-mazing outfit, one that she would feel incredible in and ooze style and sophistication. 
So fast forward to many hours online and creating sets on Polyvore, and then I finally nailed down the inspiration for Amber's outfit.....................................

Would you believe Amber already had the black heels and bow earrings in her wardrobe. Meant to be!

I interviewed the Founder, Debra Denniston to give you some insight into Hipsters for Sisters.
Tell me about the birth of Hipsters for Sisters? 

I fell in love with the fanny pack when my daughters were just toddlers. I first began to use one  to hold my keys and wallet, which allowed me to leave the diabolical diaper bag unattended as I ran around at the park with my kids. It was so liberating that I started wearing it all the time. Years later, I started having back trouble  and my chiropractor said it was from carrying my handbag. I remembered how liberating the fanny pack had been and decided to design one that even my daughters would like. I knew I was on to something when both of my daughters not only liked the initial designs but wanted to jump on board for the ride.

What is your best style advice for your 'Sisters' out there? 

The best style advice I ever received was “To wear what you makes you happy, what you like and are comfortable in.” There is nothing more stylish than a woman who is happy with the way she looks and feels. If you are confident in what you wear,  people will copy you not realizing its the confidence they are seeking, rather than the clothes.

How did you come up with your fabulous name? 

We are all about liberating women, not only from their physical baggage (big, heavy handbags) but from their emotional and intellectual baggage as well. The traditional handbag is really a symbol of our gender-based insecurities. If men can get through their day with just the contents of their pockets, why can’t we? Seriously. I can’t tell you the number of women that tell me they love our bags but could never get “all the stuff they need” in there. Well, we’re here to tell you “you don’t need all that stuff!” We view all women as our “sisters” and because one of our central missions to help liberate and empower them, we thought the name “Hipsters for Sisters” was apropos! 

What is your background?

Although none of us has a background in fashion, all three of us enjoy design and have a good, natural eye for it. I’ve always been artistically inclined and taught myself to sew with a needle and thread when I was five.  However, I didn’t learn how to use a sewing machine until I was pregnant with Kate and decided to create a wardrobe of maternity clothes. In-between those milestones I worked as a waitress, an interior designer, and a lawyer. Over time I discovered that I’m only happy when I’m making things.

Tell me three things about yourself to help my readers get to know you a little better. 

1. I am 58 years old and just starting a business when many of my friends are thinking its time to retire! I don’t think I will ever “retire” because I love what I do and can’t imagine anything I’d rather be doing. 

2. Sourcing materials for Hipsters for Sisters has made me much more aware of the precarious state of our planet. In fact, it has now become my number one concern and I feel compelled to take action to help change that.

3. I was born on the summer solstice and believe that’s the reason I am often mistaken for an extrovert.

Are your bags Vegan leather? 

As I said earlier, sourcing materials for Hipsters for Sisters has made me much more aware of the precarious state of our planet and how the production of leather is a major contributor to climate change. None of our bags are made from leather, exotic skins or fur, and all of them are eco-friendly.

Any other things my 'earth conscience' readers might like to know? 

As a modern company, we are conscious of our responsibility to consider the future of the planet right along side the future of our designs. I can’t tell you the  number of times I’ve fallen in love with a beautiful woven vegan leather or another design only to discover that it contains PVC. Sourcing beautiful fabrics that are also earth friendly is still a big challenge and the financial costs are high, but it remains our top priority. We are committed to sustainability, produce all bags locally and ethically in Los Angeles and make it our goal to source only the most innovative, earth, people and animal friendly materials available for our products.

YummoMummo meets Sonnet James 'Playdresses' x

I recently met up with the Founder of Sonnet James www.sonnetjames.com, Whitney Lundeen. And my oh my, what a beautiful soul she is. Its was clear to me that the most important things to her are her two boys and the importance of getting down with her kids to play and be present. But, it's so much easier to do, and so much more stylishly done,  if you are wearing a super cute, versatile, play dress that just screams comfort. When she came up with the idea of Sonnet James her thoughts were "I wanted a dress to feel like I was in yoga pants, and to even be able to do yoga in it. I wanted to bring youthlfullness back into my life and to feel beautiful". So well said and how so many of us feel when it comes to comfortable and stylish fashion.

She has two collections that come out a year, the Spring Collection is available on pre-order now and will start shipping March 16th. The dress I am wearing for this blogpost  is "The Marni" and costs $98 plus tax. The style will be available in the upcoming collection. I know you can't feel the dress I am wearing for yourself, but the stretchy cotton fabric of this dress is the epitome of fantastically fabulous quality. It is thick but breathable, robust but so tangible. I love it!

Here is our discussion so you can hear the words right out of Whitney's mouth. I honestly could of spent the whole morning talking to her. She also couldn't help but win my affection when she told me that Australian Vogue, and Australians in general, are the most fashionable, in her opinion.

Tell me about the birth of Sonnet James?

There are only so many years that our kids want to stay and play on the ground, and that they want to engage and play with us in pure fun. I wanted to design a dress that could help me achieve this without compromising on comfort, style and practicality. I'm totally self taught, I taught myself to sew and to design (Side note from YummoMummo - isn't that truly amazing and inspirational?)

Where do you get your design inspiration?

I love reading Vogue and I found my basic silhouette inspiration there. I want to keep the dresses very simple as I want to keep costs low. The fabric is made in New York and then manufactured in  San Francisco. The price point is higher because the dresses are made here in the USA and it's 4 x more expensive to make in the USA than offshore. The more seams, the more expensive. I look at street style and  fashion shows to also get inspiration.  When design time comes, I pull together all my inspirations throughout the year. 

What is your best piece of style advice?

Comfort is very important. I am very sensory so I need soft fabrics. If you are comfortable, that will shine from the inside out.

Tell me three fun facts about yourself?

1.  I am a firecracker, I really like to debate & discuss.  I love to talk to lots of different people, have challenging conversations. My brother says I am a force to be reckoned with and I believe you have to be stubborn to be true to yourself, so it works well for me to be this way.

2. I am an introvert and would stay indoors all day if I could.

3. I LOVE TV, something I am trying to stop in 2015. I love The Mindy Project as it makes me laugh the hardest, Law and Order, Seinfeld, The Office, The Americans, Homeland & Heart of Dixie.

Do you have any plans to cater to larger than a 14? 

The hard thing in business is that you have to make sizes that sell. I find the XL is what is always left in inventory. Since we are still a start up in the  early stage, will be able to grow and expand.

The Florence dress says Breastfeeding friendly? 

We are working hard to be breastfeeding friendly. I don't usually like the design of breastfeeding friendly dresses and it's complex to add buttons etc so with Sonnet James dresses, the fabric is such good quality and so stretchy that the Mum can just pull it down to feed.

Wardrobe Work x

I was asked to go through a wardrobe and it was truly so much fun, I just had to share.
Our goal was to go through her entire wardrobe including clothing and accessories and see -

• what items she liked/ felt good wearing (this shows and is important)
• what was outdated/ill-fitting/had lost shape
• what items she simply hadn't worn for many seasons or was pre-pre-pre kids
• some tips on the best way to dress for her body shape
• what staples she did(n't) have
• what items could be updated e.g a fresh white tee
•  And lastly, assess her accessory situation i.e what she did(n't)  have. And how to best utilize the accessories she has.  Accessories are a HUGE asset when it comes to your wardrobe. Trust me, I'm the Accessories Queen, read my "Im the Accessories Queen" post!!

Simply put, she is a busy Mum (Mom) to three little ones and needs to know what she can wear and feel fabulous in, in a New York minute.  I decided to make three piles-

1. Items to keep
2. Items to donate or save for a 'clothing swap'.
3. Items that can be simply and inexpensively altered. Here you have to decide if the piece is of good enough value to alter it, or you might as well simply buy it again. Eg, it's worth altering a $200 pair of jeans vs altering a $20 shirt. 

Another idea instead of donating, is to put aside your clothes and organize a night with your girlfriends for a good old "Clothing Swap". We all have things in our closets that we think would look great on our girlfriends and vice versa. I myself, have picked up some amazingly fun jackets from a clothing swap. And don't just stop at clothes, add jewelry and handbags, shoes, scarves etc, your children's' clothing. As we went through her closet, we wrote down staples that could be added to her wardrobe or pieces that needed to be freshened up.  I wanted to show her the different outfits she could make with her "keep" items so we decided to document below how we have taken some items and worked on how they can be worn different ways.   I really think it's beneficial to photograph and document your own outfits (you could either do this by laying them out on the bed or actually photograph yourself wearing them). If you are ever stuck for what to wear that day, think of it as your 'cheat sheet'.

I just adored this midnight blue sweater with a golden burnt orange oriental design. Here we have dressed it up and then worn it more casually, by adding the denim jacket and swapping out the heels for flats.

And again, with the same sweater, to make it more casual, we 'prepped' it out by draping it over her shoulders but still seeing the gorgeous design from behind. And by adding cheetah slip on sneakers! Since there is so much space between the two prints, they are not competing.

We have the same camo top and jeggings changing from 'day to night'. We switched out the sneakers for heels, added a black statement necklace, changed out the jacket and earrings and voila..... from the school run to drinks with the girls!

This black dress is a true staple in her closet and she's had it for many moons. Here she is wearing it casually, two different ways. 

Here you can see by taking a basic base of a pencil skirt and a denim shirt and adding high heels and this fabulously fun fur jacket, she's ready to go and have some fun! The shirt could be tucked in or tied.

A favorite dress of hers. She normally wears it like on the left, which I think is super cute and comfortable. On the right, we switched out the shoes for cheetah flats, and added a denim jacket with maroon embellished flower for another way to wear the dress casually. 

Here we had some more fun with the black dress. On the left, she is ready to rock the Sunday morning markets. On the right, we added the fun fur vest and a pop of color in the red shoes for something really different. 

We really hope you enjoyed seeing the wardrobe transformation. It was so much fun that it wouldn't be right if I didn't share it.  Big shout out to the lovely lady, Suze,  in the photos for letting me share her particular experience with you all.

A dear friend wanted to update her wardrobe with some fun pieces and who better to go shopping with than yours truly. 

We got a mix of  three dresses in a black/white stripe, a grey jersey knit with a tie waist, and a black long sleeve dress. Also, a fun pair of polka dot pants, a zebra print scarf,  two long gold chain necklaces, two pairs of ballet flats in a red and a leopard print, a super cute polka dot button down shirt and an utterly funky Ooh La La print sweater. Oh, and don't forget the leopard print belt!    As you can see,  a mix of patterns with some polka dot, zebra and stripes. The palette was very versatile and neutral but we popped in some bling with red flats and the patterns. 

She willingly agreed to 'let me work my magic' and try some pieces that she might not have chosen herself to take to the changeroom.  Well, 2 hours later and what a blast we had had. It was a late Thursday night so the change rooms were empty and we pretty much had the place to ourselves to play around and have some fun creating a million different outfits (not exactly 1million, but pretty close).  She is an awesome Mum (Mom) to four little ones so high on her clothing list are items that wash well, can afford to be covered in food and kiddo bits by the end of the day, and were affordable enough for her to dabble with for this season and beyond.  With the pieces she purchased, and some bits from her own wardrobe, we can make 18, yes 18, fabuloso outfits. Watch out world, one stylish mumma is coming your way!
All her outfits can take her from school runs to drinks with the girls. The total for this totally fashionable and stylish event was  approximately $220 and with 18 outfits, that makes a grand total of approximately $12/outfit.
Enjoy the show, here she is looking deliciously yummy mummy-like in all 18 outfits. 

From her own wardrobe were the brown boots, black booties, leggings and white tee. Staples anyone would have in their wardrobe. 

Here she only needed to add her own denim jacket, black puffer vest and clutch bag. Again, readily available staples.

We embellished her own denim jacket with a fascinator. Fascinators are very versatile.

One super comfortable striped dress worn many ways. Love this dress!

The fascinator from the denim jacket is now paired in her hair. She added her own simple black jacket with fleather sleeves. Love the pop of red with this outfit and with some red lips to rock it out the door!

I draped the sweater over the grey jersey dress for a little preppy fun  - Ooh La La! And with the leopard print flats, double Ooh La La!
